WELCOME!

We’re really glad you decided to visit and learn more about us — and give us the chance to learn more about you!

We’re glad that you want to learn more about Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church.

GPUMC is a vibrant congregation that values worship and fellowship. It is a great place to raise a family in the Christian faith or to develop meaningful relationships with God and his children. Our church has members of all ages and you are sure to find people with whom you have common interests. Please come and join us on any Sunday morning to learn more about us. We greet visitors with open arms and hope that you find our worship service as fulfilling as we do.

Frequently asked questions about attending a service

GPUMC is located at 211 Moross Road, Grosse Pointe Farms, between Ridge Road and Kercheval.

We have a large parking lot behind the church. Help yourself to a convenient space!

Enter the sanctuary by going through the large doors off the parking lot. One of our ushers will be at the door to greet you.

If we are having our worship service outside in the Memorial Garden, you will need to walk around the church building to arrive in the garden. You will see ushers and greeters along the way to ensure you don’t get lost!

What time is your worship service and how long does it last?

Worship begins at 9:30 am when you hear the chimes. Most services last about one hour.

What should I wear?

You will see people in everything from suits and dresses to blue jeans. Dress comfortably and know that nobody at this church will judge you for your clothing.

If the weather is chilly and you arrive with a coat, you can feel comfortable leaving it in the coatroom to the left of the main doors.

What about children?

We provide a nursery for babies and toddlers. Ask one of the ushers to show you the location of the nursery. You’ll be asked to complete a registration form upon arrival so the nursery attendant is able to contact you in case of an emergency.

Children who have been potty-trained are invited to leave the sanctuary to attend Sunday School after Chancel Chat, which is our name for the brief “sermon” for children each week. Our education director, Emily Bianchi, will invite children to follow her out of the sanctuary for this experience.

What about offerings?

We welcome your donations to support the ministries of the church. You may leave those in a designated area in the narthex as you enter or leave the service.

Do you serve communion every week?

We typically serve communion on the first Sunday of every month and during some special services, such as Maundy Thursday. You can learn whether communion will be served each week by checking the This Sunday page on this web site.

In the United Methodist Church, communion is available to everyone. You do not need to be a member of GPUMC or any church to join in communion at a United Methodist Church. You do not need to complete a class before taking communion as in some faith traditions.

However, if you would prefer not to take communion, that is also fine. It is not unusual for individuals to remain seated and abstain from communion.

You can learn more about the United Methodists and communion here.

If I decide I like this church and want to join or get more involved, how can I do that?

We would welcome having you become a member or a frequent visitor. If you’re interested in membership, contact the church office by email or phone (313-886-2363) and we’ll take it from there.

If you’re not ready for membership yet, you can still get involved.

  • In each pew, look for a flyer that will allow you to give us your name and contact information. You can drop this into a designated box In the narthex or leave with one of the ushers.
  • As you leave the service, you’ll see several people, including our minister, in the narthex waiting to greet you. Please introduce yourself and let them know that you want more information about GPUMC.

Most of all, we hope we see you again, either at another worship service or another event at GPUMC.
